Autumn Winter Style Basics: The Knit

Alison Perry, blogger and editor

After initially struggling with the transition from summer to autumn, I can now report that I’m firmly on board with the new season. Hurrah! So much so, in fact, that I want to share my Autumn/Winter basics – you know, the items you buy that form the foundations of your wardrobe. There have been some years when I’ve got this totally wrong, and it has thrown me for the whole season. Like a couple of years ago, when I decided that I must buy some shirts and blouses despite the fact my boobs are too big for them, and the buttons strain and pop open. Or the year I bought a bunch of roll neck jumpers which (for the very same big boobed reasons) are highly unflattering on me.

But this year, I’d go as far to say I think I’ve nailed AW dressing. You know, in that totally safe, everyday, not ‘out there’ way that I dress.

So first up: the knit. Now, I’ve had a bit of a funny relationship with knits in the past. I’ve bought them and felt frumpy or lumpy. I’ve felt too hot and too itchy. They looked great on other people, but not me. So I’ve been on a bit of a quest to find one I love, because I’m well aware that I can dismiss a whole type of clothing, when actually the truth is, I just hadn’t found the right style for me. (It took me YEARS to wear skinny jeans – I was convinced I couldn’t pull them off. See also: red lipstick.)

Imagine my joy, then when I discovered this jumper from Next.

Grey Loopy Sweater c/o Next // Black Jeggings c/o FatFace // Bag c/o Village England (similar here) // Shoes, New Look (similar here)

I love how the cut of it is almost like a sweatshirt (my usual go-to warm top in this season), the loopy/bobbly bits make it look cool (‘loopy/bobbly bits’ is an actual fashion term, you know) and the cream/stone coloured sleeves breaks up the grey a bit. I’m wearing it here in a size 14. I find Next quite generous with their sizes… some brands I have to go up to a 16, but I’m a 14 in Next (hurrah! Another reason to love them).

In the mood to shop knits? Here are some more I’ve spotted and love… (click on the image to shop each one)

Nice knit! I was on a similar quest this year and I’ve actually got the Gap one with the stripes and I love it.

Ooh knits are such a personal thing aren’t they? I always like them, but like you I often feel quite frumpy in them so I do need to spend some time finding the right one. I actually like the one with the sequins on the sleeve. Not usually my style but it looks fab.

That jumper is perfect, I love it! Sort of reminds me of a panda.
