Today, Rachel Stevens (you know, her off of S Club 7 and Strictly Come Dancing….) announced she’s pregnant with her second child. The brother or sister to three year old Amelie will be born in early 2014. Rachel announced her exciting news (congrats Rachel!) by posting a link on Twitter – the link takes you to her website which has this photo on it….
Now, my reaction was “CUTE!” but a colleague of mine had this reaction:
“Oh GROSS. Why do people feel the need to do that? It’s just really contrived and it’s smug and it’s cringey.”
My take on it is that it’s nice that people put a bit of thought into making a visual announcement now that we all use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so much. And if people can’t be a bit smug when they’ve got huge, life-altering news to share, then when can they? While I’m not down with the whole posting your scan on the internet thing (I realise I’m in the minority here and most people reading this will have done that very thing, but I just don’t like the idea of 3000 people seeing the inside of my womb) I do think this is sweet.
My colleague and I debated this for around six minutes (a long time to discuss a photo of some shoes, when you think about it) and agreed to disagree.
But what do you think – is it a lovely way to announce some fantastic news? Or is it cheesy and naff? (Psst! If you want to see REALLY special, check out this amazing Buzzfeed post, 22 Cringeworthy Ways To Tell The World You’re Pregnant. LOLs are guaranteed.)
So glad it’s not just me who doesn’t get the whole scan on fb thing! I think the way she did it is at least original, and kind of sweet š
Oh I think that’s adorbs! For me, I just don’t understand why people dislike other people’s happiness. Every baby is a gift and I think happy things like this should be shouted about more often. The world can be a pretty shit place sometimes, so why not line up some shoes and get creative with chalk. It’s a BABY. xx
I love it!
Very sweet way to do it but I am turning into a soft sap in my old age. Unfortunately she does scratch at my pet hate though …’we are pregnant’… No. WE are not pregnant. YOU are pregnant, Rachel. Grrrrr.
Cute! My friend recently did a similar thing then announcing her happy news. When I announced my pregnancy, I spent ages searching for a cute cartoon picture of a bump. Not a fan of scans- they should remain private. x
So cute and original!
I’m torn! It’s kind of cute and creative but i also think people get a bit carried away, it’s not like anyone else really cares that much! Billions of people have done it before…
I’m another one that doesn’t particularly like the scan photos. But it IS one of the happiest announcements to make and if it’s done from the heart… Well there’s nothing wrong with spreading a little love. This is a lovely, well thought out pic. As for posting half-naked pics of your baby online, no matter how high your account security, well that’s another comment entirely!
Oh, I love this. Am absolutely gutted I didn’t think of it as hate scans on fb and IG, so I was a bit stuck for what to do. I think it’s subtle and cute.
I think it’s sweet and it makes a nice change from seeing the inside of another womb š x
I like it, I think it’s quite subtle. I did a pregnancy announcement on my blog but I sometimes feel like as only a very small percentage of my ‘real life’ friends know about it, it’s almost like it’s not real. That was very OTT and I tried to be as creative as possible. On my private and personal Facebook, both times I didn’t post until 20 weeks and it was actually my husband who put the scan photo up. I rarely talked about the pregnancies on there, I just find it all a bit too personal and I am a very paranoid pregnant person. I think it’s personal choice. X

I LOVED your pregnancy announcement Katie and the “it’s a girl!” one too. You = brilliant and creative.
I love this, it’s really sweet!
This is so gorgeous! It makes me wish I wish i had been more creative!
I loved it! Thought it was really cute and clever, without being too nauseating (but then having a baby has turned me into the sort of person who cries at the TV).
I think its very cute. I don’t think anyone should judge this kind of thing. We should just all be grateful we had something to announce š
Not a fan of scan pics either-never did that with my two…they all look the same anyway don’t they and yes feel too intimate as do a lot of ‘just given birth’ pictures on FB.
I think this is sweet but I suppose I’m always cautious especially as so many family members and friends have had miscarriages (late too) and still births that these gestures feel a bit strange (just me personally).
I think it’s cute! My facebook timeline is awash with scan photos at the mo, so it would be nice to see something a bit more creative… lol š I just think if people wanna find a different way of announcing amazing news then feel happy for them! š xx
In my head I was all ‘no, no, no it’s so naff’, until I saw the picture, which is really gorgeous! Don’t think I’d do it myself, but hey, each to their own…
I love this announcement – it’s thoughtful and fun and super cute. And I agree, we all make announcements so publicly now on social media that it’s nice to be creative with them. Good on Rachel for drawing attention to some news that is wonderful. It’s a special thing to announce, so why not make it stand out š
Ahhhhahaha, the buzzfeed post was so funny! Great entertainment value.
I dont mind simple cute announcements like the shoes…but anything much more than that…not so much.
Baby scans, no thanks.
I absalutly love the idea, it’s a huge moment for any family and I would love to use an idea like this.
It makes your news stand out more and it’s not boring, also the photo would be a great keep sake
I love pregnancy announcements! I’d love to do something like this for any future children. It’s personal and special!
I love it! It’s personal and would make great announcement carda! I’d love to do something in the future if I’m expecting again!
