The Day The January Sales Gods Chose Me…

Back in October, I spent weeks lusting after a wool coat from Marks And Spencer. I had to convince myself that I didn’t really want it, that I couldn’t justify the expense. Who needs to be warm in winter anyway? Since then, I’ve been wearing my trusty spring/autumn coat from Matalan, which has led to more than a few “Aren’t you freezing?!” comments from my husband. (Well, I suppose it has been fairly cold and stormy….)

But this week, something truly brilliant happened. The January sales gods were looking down on me and decided that I would be a chosen one. On a lunch break at work, I nipped out to grab a quick sandwich. I called my husband as I walked along, and distracted, found myself standing outside Marks And Spencer while I finished the call. I said goodbye, hung up (well, I pressed ‘End Call’, but isn’t it funny how we still call that ‘hanging up’?) and thought I may as well have a very quick peek inside the shop before buying my lunch. Inside the store, I hurriedly worked my way along a sale rail, stopping at one oversized knit before realising it was three sizes too big and therefore taking the word ‘oversized’ to the extreme.

Then I turned on my heel and there they were. Seven, eight, maybe nine wool coats. Not just any wool coat… *my* wool coat. The object of my affections a few months earlier. I checked the price – it was reduced from £139 to £99. So tempting, but I still couldn’t justify spending that much money on a coat (especially when I *cough* bought a £25 cream and black coat from Primark last week.) And then something caught my eye that made my heart rate increase and my throat dry up. One of the coats had another sticker on the tag that said “Now £65″.

£65!

I tried the coat on again, but really, we all know it was just a formality. I’d already decided to buy it.

At the till point, I remembered I had been given £30 worth of M&S vouchers for my birthday – double win. So really, the coat – my dream winter coat – ended up costing me £35. This coat and me, we were clearly meant to be.

  1. I had to comment on this as I remember reading your post about this coat and being (seriously) impressed by your will power not to purchase something you loved so much. Some things are clearly meant to be and I bet aquiring THE coat at such an amazing price feels fab!!! X

Ps it looks great on you!

  2. Did you do a blog wanting this coat a couple of months ago? I really am so happy for you lol its great when this happens :)

  3. This happened to me too!
Surviving on old coats and lusting after a £109 Zara down-filled number! It had sold out online and the boyfriend even tried to find it for me but no luck.
Then, on Sunday on the King’s Road I popped in to Zara to spend Christmas vouchers and the boyfriend rushes over saying here’s the coat it’s the last one look!!

    And it fit!
So of course I had to buy it. Even though it was still £89 and I only had £25 vouchers. Not as lucky as you!
But the boyfriend did split the difference with me.
This made my Winter! So I can totally relate to your coat joy too!

  4. I’ve been indulging in lots of sales purchases online over the last weeks. I was never a big fan of buying clothes online but now I have no choice as maternity clothes are sold pretty much exclusively online. Turns out it’s not that bad. You can shop, watch TV and eat chocolate at the same time! :-)
