12 Signs That Autumn Is Here

red autumn leaves on the ground

1. Your Saturday evenings are less ‘glass of rosé and a cheeky BBQ in the garden while the kids sleep’ and more ‘red wine and take away in front of The X Factor‘. Bonus points if you’re quietly looking forward to having the fire lit too.

2. Your Facebook and Instagram feeds are filled with back to school photos – from super cute teeny five year olds in giant blazers to 12-year-olds heading to secondary school for the first time. Always makes me feel a bit emotional *blub*.

3. In the space of ten minutes, you’ll walk past the following: woman wearing winter coat, scarf and opaque tights, teenage girl wearing bum-skimming denim shorts, crop top and sandals, woman wearing flippy summer dress and ankle boots, man wearing winter coat and beanie hat. In short: no one knows how to dress in September. It’s all just a bit of guesswork.

4. To avoid point 3 from beating you. you use the new season as an excuse to go shopping for a whole new wardrobe. Well, you just can’t be expected to wear flippy summer dresses and little t-shirts all winter, can you? And layering might be on-trend, but layering with lovely NEW clothes is much better. You even make a Pinterest board of the winter boots you want. But WHICH ONES will you go for? Oh it’s just too hard when you want them all.

5. You look outside at the rain and madly rack your brain thinking ‘What do we do with the kids when it’s not beautiful sunshine again?!’ Suddenly, memories of indoor soft play centres, swimming pools and hours of painting and crafting flood back from last winter.

6.  You walk onto the train or bus and a wall of heat hits you as the transport companies whack up the heaters to the max, despite it still being a mild 19C outside.

7. You count the number of people sneezing and sniffing around you on the train or bus. (10, 11, 12…) And you hold your breath when they cough in your direction to avoid the germs infecting you.

8. You light a posh Diptyque candle.

9. Your kids’ sandals are tossed to one side and the daily footwear of choice becomes wellington boots.

10. You have that annual conundrum: Where is the best place to buy good quality, not outrageously priced black opaque tights? (OK OK! It might just be me who thinks this. But I do think it EVERY autumn. And I’m reliably informed that the M&S Autograph tights with cashmere are the best.)

11. You get your slippers out from the very back of the wardrobe. Mmmm cold feet encased in soft warm fluffy comfiness.

12. Salads are OUT. Warming sausage casserole with crusty bread is IN. Oh autumn, you’re not a friend to our waistlines, are you?

Have I missed any? What are your favourite things about autumn?

  1. I LOVE the coming of Autumn. I even don’t mind the fact that all the falling leaves are making a mess of our lovely green lawn. I’m a real cold weather girl – maybe because I was born in December, I don’t know. But I love waking up in the morning and snuggle under the duvet before I get out of bed and walk out onto the terrace – bright blue skies and chilly air. Wonderful! Did I mention I live in Portugal? Hence the bright blue skies ;)
