Charity Challenge: Will You Walk In Her Shoes?

Walk A Mile In her Shoes

I can’t imagine having to walk 5 miles every day to get clean water. 5 miles! All I have to do is walk to the kitchen. But 5 miles is what some women and girls in developing countries have to walk every day (the average is 3.7 miles) in order to survive. This often means girls don’t have time for school and women don’t have time to work or do anything else in a day, except trek for hours on end to get water.

The good news is that Care International are raising money to provide more water sources in developing countries. £100 raised by them can provide water and sanitation at a school for a class of children for two years, saving their daily walk for water and allowing them to receive an education. £1500 can  build a well close to a community, providing an abundance of fresh, clean water.

We can get involved by taking part in Walk In Her Shoes – a week long challenge happening between 4th and 10th March. By walking 10,000 steps (roughly 5 miles) every day for a week, and raising sponsorship, you can help girls and women in these countries. And, on a totally selfish level, you have a whole week of exercise and feeling great. (I know I could do with this… my new year health kick lasted about 3 days.)

Lots of mums and dads will say they don’t have time to walk 10,000 steps a day for 7 days. I say you probably do. I could get up early, ask my husband to drop off the toddler at nursery, walk 5 miles to Lewisham station and jump on a train to work from there. If an average walking pace on pavements is 3mph, I could be there in just over an hour and a half. Other mums could ask a friend or relative to look after their kids for a couple of hours… it’s only a week, after all.

You can sign up at the Care International website – registration is £15 and they’ll send you a pedometer to help you keep track of your steps. Are you in?
